On Monday, September 5th, 2022, an urgent plea surfaced on social media to help with a Cane Corso momma and her newborn puppies that were about to be dumped. Cane Corso Rescue made contact with several local volunteers and committed to rescuing Momma Luna and her litter of nine puppies, which were born on 9/2/22. On Tuesday, a Miami volunteer went to the home of the surrendering owner and picked up Momma Luna and the puppies. She transported them to the home of our temporary foster, Yvonne, who has been caring for them. Momma Luna was emaciated, not even 2 years old and this is her 3rd litter. She had 2 previous litters of 16 & 14 puppies. Momma Luna has spent her entire young life having puppies. Our temporary foster agreed to foster Momma Luna and her puppies for a couple of weeks but would have to transfer them to another foster family due to upcoming travel.
Momma Luna is very protective of her litter, which limits where they can safely be fostered. Cane Corso Rescue and Yvonne decided that it was in the best interest of Momma Luna and her pups to then go to a foster in Austin, Texas. Due to Momma Luna’s protectiveness of the puppies and how young they are, normal volunteer transportation is not an option. The new foster will be flying out to South Florida and renting a suitable vehicle to make the long journey from South Florida back to Austin, Texas with Momma Luna and her 9 puppies. The vehicle will be set up in a manner that will allow Momma Luna to continue to nurse her pups comfortably and safely. Momma Luna is a phenomenal mother and keeping her with her puppies through natural weaning age is the priority.
The cost of bringing Momma Luna and her puppies to Cane Corso Rescue will be substantial due to the cost of travel, car rental and fuel. Cane Corso Rescue is attempting to raise $1700 in order to get them into their new foster home. The rental is the biggest expense at nearly $1400 with a partner discount. The gas is estimated to be about $255 for the nearly 1400 miles that will be traveled. The volunteer flying out to Florida has already donated the airline fare to get out there and then will be driving them back to Texas! Any amount raised over our goal will go to thier feeding & vetting.
Momma Luna will be with her pups through the weaning process to make this as natural as possible. Cane Corso Rescue will raise the pups from weaning until they are ready to be adopted out.
Yvonne, has set up a public album on Facebook where you can view more photos and videos of Momma Luna and her 9 puppies: https://www.facebook.com/media/set?vanity=costabel.canecorso&set=a.5391622457590506
Cane Corso Rescue appreciates every donation that will help offset this endeavor.
