Update 2.22.15: More great news! Gertie is in transit to her foster family. We had a few set backs in the original plan of departure two weeks ago but after working closely with the shelter, securing a new foster, and finding a few transport angels, we are elated to share that she is on her way to her fabulous foster family. A heartfelt thank you to the 3 transport angels who are each driving hundreds of miles to ensure Gertie receives her miracle of a foster family. Thank you Jessica, Candace & Alfred, and Laura. Today is a great day to be Princess Gertie!
Original Plea: Cane Corso Rescue is desperately trying to save the life of Gertie as she is currently residing in a shelter in Mississippi. Gertrude (we are calling her Gertie for short) is truly a “spear of strength” as she literally saved the life of her female owner risking her life in the process… A true characteristic of the breed, Gertie was a loyal guardian of her Momma; if not for Gertie…Momma may not be here today. Gertie had to ‘step in’ when the boyfriend’s attack and horrendous beating of her human Mom signified eminent danger…she interceded (thank goodness) long enough for a plea of help to be made. Unfortunately by the time the police arrived our fearless Gertie had also taken a severe beating. To make matters worse, Gertie was placed in doggie jail along with the perpetrator who went to a human jail for criminals (where he still resides today). Gertie’s Mom is heart sick that she cannot welcome Gertie back home as she literally saved her life; unfortunately she is residing in a woman’s shelter for battered women and has a long road of recovery ahead of her.
Gertie is a stunning 2 year old female Cane Corso that was purchased by the owner while stationed in Italy. Although initially fearful of men (rightfully so), she has made tremendous progress while in the care of animal control (yes she has been with them for a few months now) learning to trust men again. You go Gertie! Gertie is doing so well at the shelter that they firmly believe she would be adopted if they placed her on the adoption floor but they are very concerned that she would fall in the wrong hands as she is “big and beautiful” and in an area known for “fighting dogs”. With limited resources, the shelter does not have the resources needed to screen potential adopters and want only the best for Gertie; therefore, they have reached out to Cane Corso Rescue. We of course want the same for Gertie and appreciate their willingness to surrender her to rescue, BUT we need a FOSTER ASAP!
Additional information will be forthcoming on Gertie once her foster family has had time to evaluate her further. (A little presumptions but we know CCR volunteers are going to help us save Gertie.)
