11/10/15-Blueberry has improved oh so much since the last post. BB knows Sit, Down, Stay, Come, Off, Leave It, Shake, Wait and Heal (most of the time). BB is 100% house trained now and can be trusted in the house for several hours unattended (although she is totally crate trained too and if we plan to be gone longer than just a few hours we do still crate her). BB has gained 40 lbs since coming to us and now tops the scale at ~120bs. She is a big and beautiful dog with a typical Cosro protective nature. She is wary of strangers but is learning slowly that they are OK as long as we are OK with them but will never be a social butterfly nor will she be a dog who solicits attention from guest but if they enter the home and basically ignore her she will come over and sniff hello. She prefers to be in the presence of guests but given her own space . When she came to us she was TERRIFIED of men and unfortunately that included her foster dad. We are happy to say that she has 100% gotten over the fear of the male in her household but it did take her a solid 3 or 4 months to trust him. BB will not be the dog for a household with kids of any age or a household where kids visit regularly as she really will need to be separated (via her crate or her own room) from them. While we have gotten her over her fear of men she is still INCREDIBLY uncomfortable around kids and that is inclusive of older kids. We feel that she was teased or abused by the kids in her previous household and it would not be fair to her and could potentially be dangerous to push her on this issue. Blueberry is a dominate female and is affectionately known in our household as BlueBully. This works with our submissive male Pit Bull but would not be ideal for a dog who sought to challenge her authority. BB will need a dominate human in her life as well who will not let her bully them as she would more than gladly become alpha of an entire household. Blueberry is good with our dog savvy cat but would likely chase a cat that ran.
Now the fun stuff, BB is OBSESSED with Squeaky balls and balls of all kinds. Her favorite past time is chasing them in the yard or searching for them hidden in the house. She has a crazy ability to find her toys anywhere and knows the terms “search” and “find it” She will systematically cover our 1 acre wooded lot and locate it no matter where it is. She will return it to us and ask us to hide it or throw it again. Once she is done with the game she takes her squeak and buries it somewhere safe in the yard and will retrieve it for you on the command “find your ball” or on her own when she is feeling like a playing a game again. Blueberry had a sad start to life and I think was never given the opportunity to play with toys so she is making up for lost time! She Loves to TRY and get in your lap and would more than gladly cuddle on the couch (although she can turn into a bully and has to be put in her place sometimes) but when invited and when she is in a calm mood she makes a good foot warmer. BB has the cutest nub that wags oh so fast when she wants something or in response to saying sorry for doing something bad. Blueberry LOVES hikes and is non-reactive to passing dogs but we have not let her interact with strange dogs. Blueberry is all athlete and can sprint and turn on a dime unbelievably fast for her size. She is also a great running partner and we have built her up to 5 miles (as long as it is not too hot). Finally a note on her escape tendencies. Blueberry is quite the Houdini and can escape from just about anything should she feel like it (Crates and yards included) so a VERY secure yard is needed for her. The positive is that while an escape artist she is not a runner and she tends to be waiting on the front porch to be let in. BB is a real clown and is just a really fun dog full of personality. She is not the gal for everyone but she is the perfect gal for someone. Blueberry originally came from a Cane Corso breeder and was born on 1/12/12 so is fast approaching her 4th B-day
2/6/15-After only one week in a foster home, Blueberry’s transformation has been nothing short of amazing. Blueberry warmed to me very quickly and has latched on like Velcro. It is clear that she was abused by a man so even though she really wants to trust Lee she is still nervous if he moves to fast and will bolt across the room and cower but now she recovers quickly and will come back to him when treats are offered. After a couple of days she stopped being so nervous and the dog she really is has begun to come out. The dog she really is, is a big, bad, puppy (I say this with a smile). She seems to have never been taught anything so even though it is obvious she wants to please she doesn’t understand what she is supposed to do. SOOO, we have been working several times a day now on basics like sit, stay, wait, nice, down, off, come and she has become a much more pleasant dog. She is also getting lots of work in the potty training department, it seems like she was mostly outside in her former life. She does well in her crate overnight and has also passed the all important cat test! It is obvious that Blueberry is an alpha female and I do not believe she would take kindly to a dog who also wanted to be Alpha. She is not a dog that would do well adopted out to a situation where another dog would want to challenge her. She is also WAY to big and crazy right now to do well with small children. I am sure that once we get her manners improved she would be fine with slightly bigger kids but I don’t think she will ever be a dog for a toddler/baby household. I don’t believe the BB walked on a leash before (or at least very often) so considering she is new to the concept she is doing really well at it.
1/27/15- Blueberry went to an amazing foster home! She is going to gets a lot of TLC and food, then she will be ready for her forever home. She traveled really well in the car and was super sweet to everyone. In less than 12 hours she has bonded to her foster mom. Her profile will be update after they have spent a little more time with her.
This is Blueberry, the mother of all the puppies that the whole world is loving. It is her turn, she needs some love of her own. She needs a wonderful loving home to recover from the most traumatic day you could imagine. She lost her home, her family, her bonded mate AND her 5 puppies all in one day when her “owner” threw her in the bed of a truck and drove her at highway speeds from Michigan to Ohio to surrender her. She has been in boarding so that she could gain enough weight to be spayed. She gave each and every ounce of body fat to her puppies. Even after a month of recuperation, the vet that did her spay said she had almost 0 body fat. It is her time. She needs a quiet home, with no small children and she would prefer a home with a calm confident male. Please put in you applications to foster.
